The Lagos State Government has refuted claims that it willfully ignored a court order by continuing the demolition of houses in Oworonshoki. Attorney General Lawal Pedro, SAN, stated at a press briefing that no court order had been served to any agency of the state before the demolitions occurred, labeling the allegations as “false and unfair.”

The demolitions, which took place last Saturday, targeted structures reportedly built without approved plans. Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, claimed that a High Court in Ikeja had issued an interim order on October 23, halting further demolitions in specific areas of Oworonshoki.

Pedro insisted that no formal notification of the court order had been received by the government. He emphasized that government agencies cannot act on informal notices and that, without proper service of process, the government cannot be held in contempt.

He criticized the misuse of court processes aimed at delaying the enforcement of planning laws and maintained that the government’s actions were necessary for public safety, particularly to prevent building collapses.

The demolition campaign in Oworonshoki had begun earlier, but Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had temporarily suspended it to allow residents time to relocate. Pedro confirmed that compensation was to be provided to those affected.

He reiterated that any claims of illegal demolition must demonstrate ownership and compliance with building regulations, stating that structures built without approval are deemed illegal and subject to demolition.

The ongoing demolitions have raised concerns among residents, but the Lagos State Government asserts that it has adhered to due process in restoring order and safety in the community.
