The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, has reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to fighting election rigging and the issue of vote-buying. This declaration was made during the swearing-in ceremony for Professor Adeniran Tella, the newly appointed Resident Electoral Commissioner for Oyo State, held at INEC’s headquarters in Abuja.
Amupitan highlighted the critical role of the Resident Electoral Commissioner in ensuring free, fair, and credible elections, stressing that maintaining the electoral system’s integrity is a fundamental responsibility. He called for the highest standards of professionalism and adherence to INEC guidelines.
“Our mission is more than a regulatory duty; it is a moral and legal obligation to the citizens,” Amupitan stated. He urged Tella to instill confidence in voters, emphasizing that their choices must genuinely count. He reassured that any misconduct within the election framework will not be tolerated.
The chairman concluded by encouraging Tella to work collaboratively with INEC staff to uphold the credibility of the electoral process, reinforcing the importance of public trust in the commission’s efforts to address challenges such as voter apathy.
