The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed claims that it has released a timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Election.
The Commission described the reports as false and misleading in a statement issued on Friday by the Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan.
INEC clarified that it has not published any timetable for the 2027 polls, stressing that it operates strictly within the provisions of the law. The Commission cited Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which mandates that a notice of election must be published not later than 360 days before the date fixed for a general election.
According to INEC, any timetable or schedule circulating outside this legal framework cannot have originated from the Commission.
The electoral body assured Nigerians that the official timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 elections would be released at the appropriate time, in full compliance with the Constitution and the Electoral Act.
It added that all verified information would be communicated through its official and established channels, urging the public and the media to disregard unverified reports.
In his New Year message, the INEC Chairman reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to conducting transparent, credible, and inclusive elections in 2027, noting that preparatory steps were already underway to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system.
Reflecting on the Commission’s activities in 2025, he commended INEC staff for their dedication, highlighting the successful conduct of the Anambra State governorship election as evidence of the Commission’s capacity to uphold electoral integrity and public trust.
