Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has issued a strong warning to officers in the Nigeria Police Force to immediately cease the unlawful and prolonged detention of Nigerians. He stressed that any officer violating constitutional human rights will face serious consequences.
In a recent interview, Egbetokun highlighted concerning unprofessional conduct among some officers and emphasized the need to improve the police force’s image. This directive comes amid rising public worries over arbitrary arrests and detentions.
Police spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi reiterated the IGP’s commitment to upholding human rights and ensuring due process in all detention procedures. He noted that while there have been improvements, instances of misconduct still exist, and the police are actively working to address these issues.
Egbetokun called on officers to maintain high standards in their public interactions and foster a culture of accountability within the force.
