The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has launched a new unit called the Special Protection Unit (SPU) to cater specifically to the protective needs of Nigeria’s elite. The SPU, according to Commander CSP Hassan Sani, was created to meet growing demand for specialized security services for high-profile individuals across the country.
Speaking at the passing out parade for 50 SPU officers in Minna, Niger State, Sani detailed that the officers had undergone a two-week intensive training program. The curriculum covered VIP protection, escort operations, firearms handling, martial arts, first aid, and fire-fighting skills. The unit aims to ensure professionalism and discipline in elite protection.
Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, who attended the ceremony, announced the donation of 25 patrol vehicles to the Niger State Police Command to bolster security in urban areas. He also disclosed plans to build new police barracks around Minna’s outskirts to improve security coverage.
The initiative signals an expanding role of the police in elite-centric services at a time when national insecurity remains a widespread concern. The collaboration between the state and federal law enforcement highlights ongoing efforts to enhance security infrastructure and training
