The Igbo Community Association in Abuja has called on President Bola Tinubu to heed the advice of concerned citizens and the international community regarding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The association criticized Kanu’s imprisonment, labeling it an injustice that negatively impacts the South East, Nigeria as a whole, and the diaspora.

Association President Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe stated that the judgment issued on November 20, 2025, reflects judicial recklessness, evoking memories of past tensions that threatened Nigeria’s unity. The group urged Tinubu to consider the voices of forty-four National Assembly legislators advocating for a political resolution to Kanu’s situation.

The statement emphasized that Kanu deserves to be treated as a Nigerian, urging the president to take this opportunity to foster peace and promote a sense of belonging for the Igbo people within the nation. The association’s appeal underscores the ongoing sentiment in the South East regarding Kanu’s continued detention and its broader implications for national unity and justice.
