The Rivers State Government has called for closer cooperation between security agencies, local communities, and residents to address growing concerns over sea piracy, illegal oil bunkering, and related crimes in the region.

Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (retd), the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, made this appeal during a town hall meeting with security stakeholders held in Opobo Town on Saturday. Represented by the State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, Ibas stressed the importance of joint efforts in protecting government infrastructure and vital state assets.

In a statement from his media aide, Hector Igbikiowubo, Ibas was quoted as saying, “We are here to ensure you work in synergy with the Local Government Administrator to protect government infrastructure and critical assets.”

He also assured citizens that the government remains committed to improving key areas such as healthcare, education, and road rehabilitation to raise living standards across the region.

Frederick Apiafi, the Administrator of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area, welcomed participants and emphasized the importance of the meeting. He noted that while the area is largely peaceful, it faces unique security threats such as piracy, theft of fishing equipment, illegal oil bunkering, and the operation of unauthorized vigilante groups.

Apiafi called for stronger community vigilance, cooperation with security agencies, and lawful support for local surveillance teams to enhance safety across Opobo/Nkoro.

The interactive session brought together traditional leaders, youth representatives, women’s groups, and other key stakeholders from both the Opobo and Nkoro kingdoms. Discussions centered on increasing security patrols, expanding local surveillance networks, and ensuring community-based vigilante groups operate within legal boundaries.

Also present were heads of various security agencies and permanent secretaries from the state government, reflecting a unified approach to community security and development.

The Rivers State Government has pledged to document all suggestions raised during the meeting and take swift action to implement them. The engagement is part of ongoing efforts to promote peace, security, and inclusive growth in all local government areas of the state.
