Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has approved the release of individuals arrested during recent protests in Ekpoma, confirming that only verified students will be freed. The decision follows unrest in the area, which the governor claims was caused not by students but by outsiders attempting to create chaos.

During a meeting with the President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Okpebholo emphasized that the protests were not student-led but were criminal activities perpetrated by former students. He assured SUG leaders that any rightful students mistakenly arrested will be identified and released promptly.

Governor Okpebholo dismissed allegations of kidnapping associated with the protests as false and staged, intended to mislead the public and incite ethnic tensions. He condemned the violence and property destruction during the protests, warning that anyone involved in destabilizing the community, regardless of their political affiliations, will face legal consequences.

The governor’s statements come in the wake of heightened tensions and violence within the region, reflecting his administration’s commitment to restoring order and ensuring the safety of citizens in Edo State.
