Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has urged the nation to prioritize tackling hunger over focusing on political defections. In his bi-monthly newsletter, Makinde addressed the recent defections of PDP governors to the APC, stating that the real concern should be when hunger and deprivation “defect” out of Nigeria, leading to prosperity and restored pride.
Makinde emphasized that families are facing impossible choices daily due to economic hardship, and these are the issues that demand attention, not political realignments. He urged Nigerians to remain focused on what truly matters and not be distracted by political maneuvers.
The governor reiterated that the outcome of the 2027 general election will be determined by the Nigerian people who are struggling with hunger and poverty. He affirmed the PDP’s commitment to providing a platform that can offer relief to Nigerians where others have caused pain.
Makinde highlighted the PDP’s past record of relative prosperity, recalling a time when salaries had value, businesses could plan, and hope was not an illusion. He stated that the party’s task now is to rebuild trust and prioritize people over politics.
Looking ahead to the PDP’s national convention in Ibadan in November, Makinde sees it as an opportunity to reset, reassert the party’s values, and send a clear message that the focus is on rebuilding lives, not just structures of power. He appealed to Nigerians to stay engaged, stay focused, and not lose faith in the power of their voice.
Makinde concluded by emphasizing that politics must serve humanity and that policies divorced from the realities of hunger, unemployment, and the erosion of dignity are not worth defending. He reiterated that economic decisions should not be solely about numbers but about their impact on people’s lives, moving them closer to or further away from poverty.
