Following the factional crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the party in Osun has announced that its governorship primary scheduled for Tuesday will no longer hold.
Osun PDP Chairman, Mr. Sunday Bisi, stated that although Governor Ademola Adeleke is the sole candidate of the party, the ongoing crisis made the cancellation of the primary inevitable. He explained that according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) timetable, the PDP can only validly nominate a candidate through a resolution duly authorized by the electoral body.
Bisi noted that the crisis has stalled the ad-hoc ward and local government congresses, which were scheduled to take place recently. He emphasized that these congresses are crucial for electing delegates to the primaries.
In light of these developments, Bisi commented, “It has become inevitable that the PDP governorship primaries can no longer hold as scheduled. It is important to reiterate that Governor Adeleke remains the sole aspirant who has purchased, submitted, and been screened in line with the party’s official timetable.”
However, he indicated that due to the internal turmoil within the national leadership of the party, there is information suggesting that Governor Adeleke may no longer be interested in seeking the PDP nomination for the upcoming Osun gubernatorial election unless a resolution recognized by INEC is reached.
Bisi recognized that the conduct of primaries is the responsibility of the National Secretariat of the PDP and expressed a commitment to transparency and trust, assuring that the party would keep its members and the public informed.
