Jimmy Carter, the 100-year-old former US president and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has died, according to his nonprofit foundation. He passed away peacefully at his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by family.

Carter had been in hospice care since mid-February 2023, returning to the small town where he was born and began his career as a peanut farmer. His son, Chip Carter, described him as a hero to those who believe in peace and human rights.

Carter served as president from 1977 to 1981, during which he focused on human rights and brokered the Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt. His presidency faced significant challenges, including the Iran hostage crisis, which ultimately led to his defeat by Ronald Reagan in 1980.

Despite a rocky presidency, Carter’s post-presidential years were marked by humanitarian efforts and diplomacy. He founded the Carter Center in 1982 and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his advocacy of social justice.

Carter is remembered for his commitment to basic Christian values of justice and love, continuing to teach Sunday school into his 90s. He is survived by his four children. His wife, Rosalynn, passed away in November 2023.
