Dr. Doyin Okupe, a prominent figure in Nigerian politics and healthcare, has died at the age of 72.

Family sources confirmed that the former presidential adviser passed away on Friday morning after battling a long-term illness believed to be cancer.

Okupe, a trained medical doctor and co-founder of the Royal Cross Medical Centre, was widely known for his active role in national politics, serving in various capacities over the years. He once held the position of National Publicity Secretary of the now-defunct National Republican Convention (NRC) and was also a senior aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan.

In 2022, Okupe briefly led the Labour Party’s presidential campaign as its Director-General ahead of the 2023 general elections. However, he resigned from the role following a conviction related to allegations of money laundering.

His political journey was marked by several notable episodes, including his detention under the regime of General Sani Abacha and his disqualification from contesting in the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP) primaries. He also made an unsuccessful bid for the governorship of Ogun State under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Dr. Okupe’s death comes after weeks of reported critical illness. He leaves behind a legacy as both a public servant and healthcare professional.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
