The Federal Government has ordered a full investigation following a viral video that showed injured accident victims apparently being neglected outside the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Jabi, Abuja.
The video, which circulated widely on social media over the weekend, captured scenes of seriously injured people left unattended near the hospital’s emergency unit. According to the person who brought the victims to the hospital, medical staff initially refused to attend to them, claiming they had no gloves.
In the footage, one of the victims was eventually helped into the emergency room, but others with visible injuries had to walk unaided into the hospital.
Reacting to the video, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare directed a thorough probe into the incident. FMC Abuja’s Public Relations Officer, Obadiah Gana, confirmed that an internal investigation had already begun.
Preliminary findings indicated that the emergency department was well-stocked with necessary medical supplies, including gloves, medications, resuscitation equipment, stretchers, and wheelchairs at the time of the incident.
The hospital apologized for any distress caused and assured the public that they take feedback seriously. They emphasized their commitment to providing quality care with compassion.
FMC Abuja also highlighted its indigent fund, which supports financially challenged patients, and noted its record of handling complex emergency cases, including unconscious patients, with the help of social workers.
Known for advanced medical procedures such as kidney transplants and open-heart surgery, FMC Abuja reaffirmed its dedication to delivering compassionate and high-quality healthcare.
The government and hospital management have promised to ensure lessons are learned and services improved as the investigation continues.
