FG Declares Public Holidays for Christmas, New Year

The Federal Government has announced public holidays to mark the 2025 Christmas and New Year celebrations.

According to an official statement issued on Monday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani, Thursday, December 25, and Friday, December 26, 2025, have been declared public holidays for Christmas and Boxing Day. In addition, Thursday, January 1, 2026, has been set aside as a public holiday for the New Year celebration.

The declaration was made on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

In the statement, the minister urged Nigerians to use the festive season as a time for reflection on the values of love, peace, humility, and sacrifice associated with the birth of Jesus Christ. He also called on citizens, regardless of religion or ethnicity, to pray for national peace, improved security, and sustainable development.

Tunji-Ojo further advised Nigerians to remain law-abiding and security-conscious during the celebrations, emphasizing the importance of unity and compassion as the year comes to an end.

He extended warm Christmas and New Year greetings to Christians in Nigeria and across the world, as well as to all Nigerians, expressing hope that the season would strengthen national unity and renew collective commitment to nation-building.
