The Federal Government asserts that Nigeria’s health sector has remained stable over the past two and a half years, experiencing no major disruptions. Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Ali Pate, made this statement during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics. He attributed the stability to the government’s strategic planning and investments in the healthcare system.
Pate noted that while there were minor disruptions due to legacy issues involving resident doctors, the health sector has generally maintained harmony. The administration of President Bola Tinubu is reportedly working to improve the welfare of medical personnel.
He emphasized the need for dialogue between health professionals and government authorities, indicating that improvements in conditions of service are underway.
On November 30, the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) suspended an indefinite strike after reaching a memorandum of understanding with the Federal Government. This strike, which began on November 1, demanded fair remuneration, payment of salary arrears, better working conditions, adequate staffing, and essential medical infrastructure.
