The Federal Government is pressing to expedite the trials of approximately 5,000 individuals suspected of terrorism-related activities currently held in pre-trial detention. A significant backlog in terrorism cases has prompted action, as outlined in the National Counter-Terrorism Centre’s 2025–2030 Strategic Plan.

The NCTC, in collaboration with the Defence Headquarters and the Federal Ministry of Justice, is reviewing cases to facilitate quicker prosecutions or dismissals for those lacking sufficient evidence. In 2024, efforts resulted in 393 terrorism-related prosecutions and an increased conviction rate, which rose from 41.5% in 2018 to 84% last year.

Furthermore, Nigeria plans to implement DNA profiling in a new National Database on Terrorism to strengthen investigatory and prosecutorial capabilities. This database will centralize information on known and suspected terrorists, bolstering intelligence-sharing across agencies.

Additionally, the NCTC’s National Operations Centre leverages technology to support multi-agency operations, enhancing real-time intelligence and situational awareness.

As military operations intensify against banditry led by figures such as Bello Turji, the government aims to tackle growing security challenges through enhanced operational funding and cooperation with neighboring countries.
