Former Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Chief Nduese Essien, has denied claims that he joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) alongside Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State. Essien addressed the media regarding his presence at the Government House in Uyo during Eno’s defection to the APC, clarifying that he attended the event to show solidarity with the governor.

Essien emphasized that his attendance was not an indication of a political shift but rather a demonstration of support for Eno’s constitutional right to make personal political decisions. He stated, “I have not defected from any party to another. My attendance at the event was not a declaration of political affiliation but a demonstration of support for the governor.”

He elaborated on his decision not to seek elective office since 2014, choosing to function as an elder statesman focused on promoting peace and justice. Essien acknowledged Governor Eno’s defection as a personal choice, noting the uncertainties surrounding the future of the PDP.

While he expressed understanding of Eno’s motivations, Essien criticized the governor for pressuring state officials and local government chairmen to follow suit, questioning the sincerity of Eno’s commitment to inclusiveness. He highlighted that elected officials should operate independently based on their mandates.

Essien also noted that despite Eno’s previous support for APC figures, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the governor’s recent actions could undermine his legacy of fairness and compromise. He urged political actors and the public to respect each other’s convictions to maintain peace in the state.
