Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN, has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of unlawful detention and trial by media after being denied bail, despite a court order. In a statement issued by his media aide, Malami highlighted that the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory had granted him interim bail on December 23, 2025, but the EFCC ignored the ruling.
Malami’s office stated that over 14 days have passed since his detention without arraignment before a court, which his lawyers have described as unconstitutional. He accused the EFCC of conducting selective media briefings to shape public opinion against him, labeling it a “media trial” following a lack of judicial backing.
“Court orders are not advisory; they are binding on all authorities,” his statement emphasized, warning against any selective obedience that could undermine the rule of law. Malami expressed his willingness to cooperate with legal processes but condemned what he termed “trial by detention” and “political vendetta.”
As of the latest reports, the EFCC has not responded to these allegations.
