The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed allegations from Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, who suggested that the agency is being used by political adversaries to target him and his administration. In a statement shared on its official X account, the EFCC characterized Mohammed’s assertions as “far-fetched” and “unfounded,” asserting its independence from political influences.
This response follows remarks made by Governor Mohammed, who alleged that the EFCC is being manipulated by interests linked to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike to go after him and his aides. The agency emphasized its impartiality and dedication to combating financial crimes, rejecting any implication of partiality towards specific political figures.
The EFCC’s statement criticized Mohammed for associating its actions in Bauchi with any political influence, stressing that he is currently protected from prosecution due to his official immunity despite facing a money laundering trial before his election.
Additionally, the commission addressed ongoing investigations concerning members of the Bauchi State Government, asserting that the evidence related to these cases is publicly accessible. They pointed out the inconsistency of political figures who claim persecution when the commission acts against opposition members while remaining silent when similar cases involve ruling party members.
The EFCC reiterated its commitment to enforcing the law and urged Governor Mohammed to concentrate on his governance duties rather than deflecting scrutiny with claims of political victimization. The commission remains determined to uphold accountability within Nigeria’s financial sector as investigations continue.
