Some youths in Edo State on Friday staged a protest at the family residence of former governor Godwin Obaseki, vowing not to tolerate any form of disrespect toward the Oba of Benin.

The protesters, drawn from various youth and cultural groups, gathered peacefully outside the residence, chanting solidarity songs and displaying placards expressing support for the Benin monarchy. They said the demonstration was aimed at defending the dignity of the Oba, whom they described as the cultural and spiritual father of the Edo people.

Speaking during the protest, representatives of the groups accused associates of the former governor of making comments they considered offensive to the Benin royal institution. They alleged that such remarks, if unchecked, could undermine the respect traditionally accorded to the Oba of Benin.

The youths insisted that while political disagreements are expected in a democracy, traditional institutions must be treated with honour and restraint. They warned that any further actions or statements perceived as disrespectful to the Oba would be strongly resisted.

The protest comes amid heightened tensions in the state following recent controversies involving members of the Obaseki family and claims of disrespect toward the Benin Palace. The situation has sparked widespread public debate and calls for calm.

Meanwhile, traditional authorities have urged restraint, cautioning youths against taking the law into their own hands and emphasizing the need to resolve disputes peacefully and within the confines of the law.
