Mrs. Maria Oligbi-Edeko, the Deputy Speaker of the Edo House of Assembly, has announced her resignation during a plenary session in Benin City. Her departure comes in light of the recent shift in party dynamics, as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lost its majority due to defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Oligbi-Edeko, who represented Esan North-East II, made her resignation known on Monday, explaining that her decision was motivated by a desire for fairness and equity among all constituencies. She expressed gratitude to the PDP leadership and members for their support during her time in office.

Following her resignation, the Assembly swiftly elected Mr. Osamwonyi Atu from the APC (Orhionmwon East) as the new Deputy Speaker. The Majority Leader, Hon. Jonathan Aigbokhan, moved a motion to ensure that Oligbi-Edeko receives all her entitlements, which was unanimously approved by the Assembly.

Lawmakers praised Oligbi-Edeko for her commitment to public service and her dedication to her constituents throughout her tenure.
