The Edo State Government has refuted claims that teachers are being instructed to cut grass and perform menial maintenance jobs in public schools. Dr. Paddy Iyamu, the Commissioner for Education, issued a statement clarifying that any teachers engaging in such tasks are doing so voluntarily, and not at the government’s directive.

Iyamu responded to allegations made by a civil society organization, labeling them as “unfounded” and detrimental to ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing the teaching profession in the state. He emphasized that the ministry does not condone practices that distract teachers from their primary role of imparting knowledge.

The commissioner announced a full investigation into the matter to address any irregularities. He reassured teachers that the government is committed to improving their working conditions, citing recent initiatives such as wage increases, regularization of casual staff, and construction of teachers’ quarters.

Iyamu concluded by urging the public to be cautious of misinformation and reiterated the administration’s dedication to ensuring that every Edo child receives quality education and that teachers take pride in their profession.
