A significant crisis has emerged within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Jigawa State, leading to legal action against the party. Aggrieved members have filed a lawsuit in the Federal High Court in Dutse, seeking an injunction to prevent the conduct of local government and state congresses. This action was prompted by allegations of irregularities and violations of the party’s constitution during the congress preparations.
The lawsuit is represented by Barrister Dahiru Sheikh Mujaddadi and another member, challenging the state PDP and several key figures involved in the congress preparations. The suit names the PDP, Hon. Umar M. Bature (PDP National Publicity Secretary), Alhaji Abdulillah Ali Diginsa (former state party chairman), H.E. Sheriff Abdullahi (Chairman of the Jigawa State Local Government Congress Electoral Committee), and Hon. Bello Isyaku (Chairman of the LG Congress Electoral Appeal Committee, Jigawa State) as defendants. The case, marked FHC/DT/CS/19/2025, was heard on May 20, 2025, and has been adjourned to May 28, 2025, for further mention.
One of the aggrieved members, Hon. Abba Anas Adamu, expressed that the faction is seeking justice and fair hearing due to alleged irregularities in the congress preparations. Adamu claims that the ward and local government executive congresses were improperly conducted in private residences, and that state-level elections were merely appointments rather than democratic processes. He accused the PDP in Jigawa of being hijacked and turned into a personal enterprise, where the opinions and rights of other members are disregarded. Adamu stated, “We are optimistic that the court will nullify whatever was conducted illegally and unconstitutionally in the name of local government and state congress.”
The ongoing legal battle highlights significant internal strife within the PDP in Jigawa State, raising concerns about the party’s adherence to democratic principles and its governance structure.
