The Federal High Court in Abuja has found Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, guilty of contempt due to a satirical apology she posted on Facebook.
Justice Binta Nyako delivered the judgment regarding a suit filed by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan challenging her suspension. The contempt application was initiated by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who argued that the senator’s social media post violated a prior court order prohibiting comments related to the case.
The senator’s counsel contended that the post pertained to separate sexual harassment allegations against Akpabio and was not linked to her suspension.
After reviewing the evidence, Justice Nyako concluded that the post was related to the suspension matter, resulting in a guilty verdict for contempt. The court ordered Akpoti-Uduaghan to publish an apology in two national dailies and on her Facebook page within seven days, and to pay a fine of N5 million.
