Four governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have arrived in Ibadan, Oyo State, as the party pushes forward with its national convention, despite a Federal High Court order suspending the exercise. The governors present include Bala Mohammed of Bauchi, Dauda Lawal of Zamfara, Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa, and Seyi Makinde of Oyo. Conflicting court rulings have created a challenging environment for the PDP. Justice Peter Lifu ordered the party to suspend the convention, restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognizing it without allowing Sule Lamido, a contender for the national chairmanship nomination form, to participate. Conversely, an earlier ruling from the Oyo State High Court permitted the convention to proceed, leading to a legal deadlock.
Despite these uncertainties, preparations for the convention are underway, with delegates from various states arriving in a celebratory mood. Security measures are in place, including an Armoured Personnel Carrier at the venue. However, INEC announced it would not monitor the PDP convention, highlighting its commitment to lawfulness and adherence to the FCT High Court’s orders. Sule Lamido criticized the party’s governors for the crisis, asserting they have strayed from the party’s foundational principles. A public disagreement between party leaders Bode George and Wike further underscores the divisions within the PDP. With internal factions emerging, the party’s stability ahead of the 2027 elections is in jeopardy. The Board of Trustees has recommended suspending the convention until reconciliation is achieved, but this advice has largely been disregarded by the National Working Committee. The situation reflects the ongoing power struggle within the PDP, which faces significant challenges as it approaches future electoral battles.
