Breaking News! Constitution Review Committee Proposes 31 New States in Nigeria

February 6, 2025 – The House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review has put forward a proposal for the creation of 31 new states in Nigeria, which would increase the total number of states to 67 if approved.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who led the committee, presented the proposal during a plenary session. The new states are proposed as follows:

  • North Central: 6 new states
  • North East: 4 new states
  • North West: 5 new states
  • South East: 5 new states
  • South South: 4 new states
  • South West: 7 new states

The proposal includes specific requirements for the creation of new states, such as:

  • An act of the National Assembly must be supported by at least two-thirds of its members.
  • Local government councils and state assemblies must endorse the proposal.

Proposed names for the new states include Okun, Okura, and Confluence from Kogi; FCT; Amana from Adamawa; and New Kaduna and Gujarat from Kaduna State, among others.

The committee has emphasized the importance of following constitutional guidelines in the proposal process, stating that all submissions must be provided in both hard and electronic formats.

This proposal has the potential to significantly alter Nigeria’s administrative framework, pending further discussions and necessary approvals.
