Nigerian Navy officer, Lt. A.M. Yerima, has narrowly escaped an assassination attempt in Abuja. The incident occurred on Sunday evening when Yerima noticed he was being followed by unidentified men in two unmarked Hilux vans.

Military sources revealed that the officer executed a “strategic maneuver” to evade his pursuers while traveling from the NIPCO Filling Station to Gado Nasco Way around 6:30 p.m. The matter is currently under investigation, and authorities are treating it with the seriousness it deserves.

This incident follows a recent confrontation between Lt. Yerima and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, regarding a disputed land site in Gaduwa District. The clash, which was recorded on video, has led to widespread public debate and has prompted intervention from the Presidency to halt demolition at the site.

Military veterans have criticized Wike for his remarks during the altercation, demanding an apology and warning that they would occupy the minister’s office if any disciplinary action was taken against Yerima.

Minister of Defence Mohammad Badaru Abubakar has assured that military personnel acting lawfully will not face sanctions. He emphasized the commitment to protect officers who are performing their duties lawfully and effectively.
