The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the escalating violence in the state. The party claims that Governor Hyacinth Alia is unable to effectively address the worsening security situation.
This appeal follows the recent killings of a police officer and 41 residents across four communities in Gwer West Local Government Area, which the APC described as a tragic addition to ongoing unprovoked attacks.
Daniel Ihomun, the state publicity secretary under the Austin Agada faction, stated, “It is clear that Governor Alia’s administration lacks the strategy and capacity to handle the persistent security crisis.” He criticized the government’s inaction and the “conspicuous silence” of the Benue State House of Assembly, which he condemned for its sudden recess amid the violence.
The APC urged President Tinubu to deploy additional security personnel to the state to protect lives and restore peace. They also called for a stakeholders’ security meeting, involving representatives from various sectors, to address the rising insecurity.
While Governor Alia condemned the killings and reaffirmed his commitment to the safety of Benue residents, he also supported traditional institutions that have mandated the evacuation of criminal herders from the state.
Alia emphasized the need for security agencies to intensify efforts in apprehending those responsible for the violence.
