Mazi Paul Ibe, spokesperson for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has strongly criticized Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for publicly predicting the downfall of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In remarks made to newsmen Abuja, Ibe likened Wike’s comments to a man wishing death upon his own family, calling the act a disturbing betrayal.
Wike, formerly a PDP governor and now serving in the APC-led federal government, had aligned with APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje in declaring that the PDP would collapse by the end of 2025. Ganduje cited the opposition party’s internal disputes and wave of defections as signs of its disintegration.
While acknowledging that Ganduje’s stance was expected given his role in the ruling party, Ibe said Wike’s echoing of the sentiment was “deeply unsettling” and revealed a troubling contradiction. He stated, “It is akin to a man wishing harm upon his own children or family. Such a position is not only unnatural, it sits uncomfortably with any rational and fair-minded individual.”
Ibe argued that Wike’s comments undermine party unity and reflect poorly on his loyalty, especially considering his past leadership within the PDP. He warned that such remarks could damage the party’s image as it struggles to rebuild ahead of the 2027 elections.
Once the dominant political force in Nigeria, the PDP has experienced a steady decline in recent years, battling leadership crises and defections, with Wike’s criticism further intensifying concerns about its future viability as a credible opposition.
