In a premeditated move that may portend a political realignment prior to the general election of 2027, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar hosted Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, at his Abuja home on Monday afternoon.
In the same elections, Atiku—who was running for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the main opposition party—announced the meeting on his verified X profile, which was once Twitter.
Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), did, however, win the presidential election.
Given that Obi ran with Atiku in the 2019 general election under the PDP banner, the two had a friendly political history. They did, however, split up in the run-up to the 2023 presidential election, with Obi choosing the LP’s presidential ticket.
In the 2023 presidential contest, which Tinubu won, Obi finished third and Atiku finished second.
Without going into specifics about the conversation, Atiku called his meeting with Obi on Monday an honour and a privilege.
