Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned both federal and state governments for their inadequate responses to ongoing safety and disaster management issues, following two tragic events: the road accident that claimed the lives of 21 athletes from Kano State and the floods in Niger State that have resulted in over 150 fatalities.

In a statement, Atiku expressed his deep sorrow over these incidents and called for immediate action to prevent further tragedies. He emphasized the importance of enhancing road safety measures and implementing effective flood management strategies, especially as Nigeria enters the peak of the rainy season.

Atiku remarked, “I am heartbroken by the tragic accident that claimed the lives of 21 Kano State athletes returning from the National Sports Festival. These young individuals represented the best of our nation, and their untimely passing is a profound loss.”

He also highlighted the rising death toll from the flooding in Mokwa, Niger State, stressing the urgent need for proactive measures to protect vulnerable areas. “We must plan how to avert further loss of lives in flood-prone regions, particularly as we are still early in the rainy season,” he stated.

Atiku criticized systemic failures in governance, particularly regarding the enforcement of road safety regulations and flood prevention strategies. He warned that failure to take action would lead to more avoidable tragedies and urged the government to prioritize public safety and disaster management.

He extended his condolences to the bereaved families and the sporting community in Kano, calling for national unity in addressing these critical challenges.
