Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has explained his decision to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to support President Bola Tinubu, emphasizing that it was based on conviction and honesty. Eno officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) in June 2025 during a ceremony at the Government House in Uyo.

In a recent interview, Eno stated that he has taken on a leadership role within the APC in Akwa Ibom, claiming support from Senate President Godswill Akpabio. He described the transition as a “merger, not an acquisition,” urging party members to unite for growth.

Eno expressed his belief in Tinubu’s administration, citing economic reforms such as the removal of fuel subsidies and improvements in the power sector. He acknowledged Akwa Ibom’s history as a PDP stronghold but insisted that the Constitution allows for freedom of association.

He took several months to justify his move to the people of Akwa Ibom, stating, “I appreciate that we have always been a PDP State… but movement, when you have to support what you believe in, shouldn’t be a problem.”

The governor highlighted the importance of transparency, arguing that remaining in the PDP while supporting Tinubu would be seen as anti-party activity. He reaffirmed his commitment to openly pursuing his beliefs and supporting the president’s initiatives for economic recovery.
