Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has formally resigned his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing persistent internal crises and unresolved leadership disputes within the party.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Friday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, who disclosed that Yusuf communicated his decision through a resignation letter addressed to the Chairman of the NNPP, Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Gwale Local Government Area.
According to the statement, the resignation takes effect from January 25, 2026.
In the letter, Governor Yusuf expressed appreciation to the party for offering him a political platform and for the support he received from party leaders and members across Kano State since joining the NNPP in 2022.
He noted, however, that his decision followed deep concerns over lingering internal disputes and prolonged legal battles that have continued to destabilise the party at both state and national levels.
The governor said the leadership disagreements and court cases have contributed to growing disenfranchisement among party members, leading to widening divisions and weakening internal cohesion.
According to him, the situation has created uncertainty within the party’s structure and produced fractures that appear increasingly difficult to reconcile.
Yusuf stated that his decision was reached after careful reflection and was guided by what he considered the overall interest of the people of Kano State.
He emphasised that the resignation was taken in good faith, without bitterness, and reaffirmed his commitment to peace, unity and the continued development of the state.
The statement further revealed that the governor’s exit from the NNPP was accompanied by the resignation of 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen across the state.
Confirming receipt of the resignation letter, the NNPP Secretary of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, acknowledged the internal challenges facing the party and accepted the governor’s decision.
Zubairu commended Yusuf’s performance in office, describing him as one of the party’s most impactful governors, and praised his administration’s efforts in infrastructure development, urban renewal, healthcare, education and economic empowerment.
