The price war in Nigeria’s petroleum sector has intensified, with some retail outlets now selling Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) below N739 per litre, the rate recommended by Dangote Petroleum Refinery.

Since the Dangote refinery reduced petrol pump prices from about N900 to N739 in December 2025, many importers and depot owners have faced losses and lowered prices further to remain competitive. Observations over the weekend revealed NIPCO sold petrol at N738 per litre, SAO at N735, Akiavic at N737, and an AP station in Mowe, Ogun State, at N736.

Marketers monitor rivals’ prices closely, as motorists flock to stations offering the lowest rates. The Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria stated that the average landing cost of petrol is N762.38, while Dangote’s ex-gantry price is N699, yet many still adjust prices to stay competitive.

The Dangote refinery had previously reduced the gantry price by N129, from N828 to N699, and enforced a pricing regime, with MRS selling at N739 per litre. The refinery reports daily loads between 31 million and 48 million litres since December 16, 2025, under market demand.

Measures such as reducing minimum purchase volumes and offering a 10-day credit facility aim to enhance liquidity, support small operators, and reduce reliance on imported fuel. The refinery emphasized that the price adjustments reflect market competition and downstream liberalization rather than supply constraints.
