A horrific attack by suspected terrorists at the Kasuwan-Daji market in the Demo community of Borgu Local Government Area, Niger State, has claimed the lives of over 30 people. The incident occurred on Saturday evening and extended into the early hours of Sunday, resulting in numerous abductions.
According to reports from Channels Television, the armed assailants looted food and other valuables worth millions of naira before setting the market on fire. Eyewitnesses indicated that the terrorists attacked the community without facing any resistance as they emerged from the nearby National Park.
A local resident reported that approximately 42 individuals were bound and killed during the attack, highlighting the violence of the incident.
The Niger State Police Command confirmed the attack and stated that more than 30 victims lost their lives, with several others taken captive. In a statement, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, explained that the assault began around 4:30 PM on January 3, 2026, and continued until the early morning hours of January 4. He said, “On 03/01/2026 at about 9 PM, it was reported that suspected bandits invaded Kasuwan-Daji, plundered shops, and torched the market.”
He further mentioned that efforts are underway to rescue those who have been abducted, with a joint security team dispatched to the area to evaluate the situation.
This incident adds to a disturbing pattern of violence in Niger State, which has faced a rise in terrorist activities, including the recent kidnapping of over 300 students and teachers from St. Mary’s Private Catholic Primary and Secondary School in November 2025.
