Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, stated that he would not allow himself to be buried politically. During a stakeholders’ meeting in Okrika LGA of Rivers State, Wike encouraged his supporters to work towards the success of President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign in the upcoming polls.
He expressed that a decision has been made regarding Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s ambitions for a second term, firmly stating, “We have made a decision as far as Tinubu is concerned. The other one [Fubara] — no way. Because if we make another mistake, then we will go and bury ourselves politically.” The ex-Rivers State governor emphasized that he would not permit such a mistake to repeat itself.
Wike’s remarks come following his public criticism of Fubara, who recently left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the All Progressives Congress (APC). Wike accused Fubara of violating a peace agreement established prior to the lifting of the emergency rule in Rivers, which allowed for his return to office.
In his statements, Wike underlined the importance of leaders serving the will of the people rather than pursuing personal interests. He promised that the “leadership mistake” in Rivers would be corrected in the 2027 elections and hinted at revealing details of the peace agreement that facilitated Fubara’s rise to power.
Addressing stakeholders in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGA, Wike reiterated his commitment to supporting Tinubu, noting that Fubara’s backing would not guarantee his re-election. He remarked, “If you played well with the first one and succeeded, do you think you can succeed with the second one? There cannot be two markets in one day.” He urged his supporters not to be misled by false assurances regarding political stability.
Wike concluded by affirming the collective decision to fully support Bola Ahmed Tinubu, pledging to correct past mistakes and ensuring all efforts would be made to secure the required backing for the president’s campaign.
