Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has explained his decision not to support President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election, citing concerns about the survival of democracy and the future of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Makinde made these remarks during a media chat at the Government House in Ibadan, where he discussed his political disagreements with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The rift reportedly began when Wike assured President Tinubu during a meeting that he would “hold PDP” for him ahead of the upcoming election. Makinde questioned Wike’s unilateral commitment, stating that such a declaration was made without consulting other party stakeholders. He emphasized that while Wike has the right to support Tinubu, other party members should also have the opportunity to protect the integrity of the PDP and oppose any actions that could jeopardize democratic pluralism.

Makinde reiterated that President Tinubu did not request Wike’s commitment and described the act as unsolicited. He attempted to persuade Wike to reconsider his position but ultimately decided to distance himself from Wike’s move. Makinde concluded by affirming his independence in political decision-making, emphasizing that he will choose whom to support in 2027, separate from Wike’s commitments.
