Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) have gathered in Abuja for a nationwide protest aimed at addressing the escalating insecurity in Nigeria. The protest sees participation from NLC President Joe Ajaero and various civil society allies, including human rights activist Omoyele Sowore.

Security personnel, including police, civil defense, and officials from the Department of State Services (DSS), have been deployed to ensure safety during the event.

Ajaero emphasized that the protest is crucial for drawing attention to the government’s responsibilities in combating insecurity, which he claims is severely impacting Nigeria’s economy and deterring investment. He noted that the ongoing violence has consequences for workers, stating, “Many workers are being kidnapped daily… The children who are kidnapped are the children of workers.”

In light of these challenges, Ajaero called for an overhaul of Nigeria’s value system and highlighted the need for financial support measures, such as an “insecurity allowance” for affected workers. He argued that the culture of banditry and insecurity is foreign to Nigerians and urged collective action to combat these issues.
