Following a failed coup attempt in Benin Republic, at least a dozen soldiers have been arrested, including suspected ringleaders. Military and security sources confirmed the arrests to AFP on Sunday.

A military source indicated that 13 arrests were made, noting all detainees were serving soldiers, except for one former member of the armed forces. The arrests followed a broadcast on Benin’s national television where military officers announced the removal of President Patrice Talon and the dissolution of state institutions.

The officers identified themselves as the Military Committee for Refoundation and claimed to have seized power. However, the presidency dismissed the claims, stating President Talon was safe and loyal forces were restoring order. The government described the incident as the work of a “small group.”
