Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has declared that he will resign from office if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu fails to secure victory in the state during the 2027 presidential election. The governor made the bold statement during an interview with journalist Babajide Otitoju, insisting that Edo’s political landscape is now firmly aligned with the President.
Okpebholo described Tinubu as “more popular than me in Edo,” crediting ongoing federal infrastructure projects for strengthening support for the President. According to him, key developments such as the Sapele Road reconstruction and flyover projects in Benin City have endeared the administration to residents, leaving opposition parties with little room to manoeuvre.
He dismissed concerns about the influence of former Governor Godwin Obaseki and the Labour Party, stating that both have lost relevance in the state’s current political climate. Okpebholo argued that Obaseki’s record in office has eroded his standing among Edo people, insisting that residents would not welcome him back during the election season.
Reaffirming his confidence, the governor said there would be “no contest” for Tinubu in Edo State in 2027. Despite Otitoju’s caution about making such a sweeping pledge, Okpebholo maintained that he is prepared to step down if the President fails to win the state under his leadership.
