The Samuel Anyanwu faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State has officially endorsed Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, as the national leader of the party. This decision was reached during a stakeholders’ meeting in Owerri, attended by party elders and officials.

During the meeting, State Chairman Austin Nwachukwu emphasized the chapter’s commitment to the PDP’s constitution and internal democracy. He noted that, despite recent tensions, the party remains united.

A unanimous motion supported Wike’s leadership role, highlighting his significant contributions to the PDP’s expansion from four states in 2015 to 16 states in subsequent years. Wike was described as a stabilizing figure essential for the party’s survival and reorganization.

The stakeholders also reaffirmed their support for Senator Anyanwu, recognizing his commitment to strengthen party structures. They expressed confidence in AbdulRahman Mohammed as Acting National Chairman and Senator Maho Ohabunwa as Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

Amidst the ongoing political turmoil, the meeting distanced itself from a recent convention in Ibadan, labeling it unlawful, and commended the Independent National Electoral Commission for boycotting the event.

Nwachukwu stressed that the Imo PDP is an “undivided entity,” calling for unity and discipline as preparations for upcoming elections intensify.

The division in the PDP has escalated following the expulsion of Wike, Anyanwu, and other key members by the rival Umar Damagum faction, triggering further clashes between the factions over control and access to party resources.
