The Senate has confirmed Major General Waheedi Shaibu as the new Chief of Army Staff, a decision that follows the approval of General Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff. This marks a significant step in President Bola Tinubu’s initiative to revamp Nigeria’s security leadership amid ongoing challenges.

The confirmation took place during a tightly secured session at the National Assembly in Abuja, where Senate President Godswill Akpabio emphasized the importance of selecting competent and patriotic officers to ensure national security. He requested that senators limit their questioning of the nominees, as further discussions would occur in closed sessions.

Senator Isah Jubrin from Kogi East expressed strong support for Shaibu, praising his character and dedication over their 30-year acquaintance. He asserted that Shaibu possesses the necessary qualities to navigate Nigeria’s current security challenges.

The rapid confirmation of Shaibu and Oluyede signals the Senate’s commitment to expediting the approval process for all service chiefs appointed by President Tinubu, aiming to bolster Nigeria’s defense strategy in response to ongoing security threats.
