The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has affirmed that internal conflicts will not impede the conduct of its national convention, scheduled for November 15–16, 2025. This statement was made by the party’s national publicity secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, who urged members to avoid actions that could undermine party unity.
Ologunagba’s comments come amid a fresh rift concerning party control in Akwa Ibom. His announcement regarding the removal of the State Working Committee (SWC) and the appointment of a caretaker team led by Igwat Umoren was challenged by the party’s national secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, who declared the decision “null and void.” The incumbent state chairman, Aniekan Akpan, has also rejected the dissolution.
Speaking at an interactive session with journalists in Abuja, Ologunagba stated that the party is fully prepared for the upcoming convention. He characterized the perceived conflicts as democracy in action, emphasizing that the national chairman and national secretary have distinct roles, with the secretary unable to unilaterally call meetings or release statements without approval.
He reassured members and Nigerians that preparations for the convention are on track, stating, “Every chapter is involved… There is no threat to the process. Nigerians can rest assured that on November 15–16, 2025, the convention will take place as scheduled.”
Regarding the crisis in Akwa Ibom, he reiterated the party’s position and warned against promoting parallel narratives, asserting that the decisions made were properly convened and documented.
In reaction to President Bola Tinubu’s recent Independence Day address, Ologunagba described it as uninspiring and disappointing, criticizing the APC-led government for worsening economic conditions and increasing national debt. He raised concerns about insecurity and rising costs of living, questioning the president’s claims of economic improvement.
