The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) to form a team of medical experts to evaluate the health condition of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). This ruling, delivered by Justice James Omotosho, mandates that the report be submitted within eight days to assist the court in deciding on Kanu’s application for a transfer to the National Hospital for proper medical care.

Kanu has raised concerns about what he describes as a pattern of fraud and judicial misconduct surrounding his detention since his extraordinary rendition in 2021. He highlighted previous court rulings that declared his detention unconstitutional and criticized the federal government for failing to comply with these decisions.

The NMA’s medical team is required to assess the capacity of the Department of State Services (DSS) facility to meet Kanu’s health needs and may utilize any hospital in the country for their investigations. The committee should include eight to ten members, specifically a cardiologist and a neurologist, along with the Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital.

This development comes amidst ongoing concerns regarding Kanu’s health and the conditions of his detention.
