The Supreme Court has reserved judgment in the Edo State Governorship Election appeal case. The apex court made this decision after taking arguments for and against the election that produced Senator Monday Okpebholo as the duly elected governor. Justice Garba Lawal, who presided over the hearing of the appeal filed by Asue Ighodalo and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stated that the date for the judgment delivery would be communicated to the involved parties.
Ighodalo, through his legal representative Ken Mosia SAN, appealed to the Supreme Court to remove Okpebholo and declare him the winner, arguing that he had secured the majority of lawful votes in the election.
However, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), represented by Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, urged the apex court to dismiss the appeal entirely. Agabi contended that Ighodalo and the PDP had previously stigmatized the election as invalid due to non-compliance with the Electoral Act 2022 and therefore could not inconsistently seek to be declared winners of an illegal election.
