Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has claimed that a property belonging to his younger brother was demolished in Lagos without any legal backing. Obi revealed the incident via a post on his verified social media account, stating that the property had been owned by his brother’s company for over 15 years before its destruction.

He alleged that the demolition was executed by unidentified individuals based on a vague court judgment that did not specify his brother, the property, or include any demolition order. Obi recounted a frantic call from his brother, who was denied entry to the site while the demolition was underway.

Upon arriving at the scene, Obi was reportedly barred from entering and informed that the demolition was in accordance with a court order. However, he pointed out that the supposed judgment referred to unnamed squatters and lacked any official authorization for the demolition.

Obi expressed his disbelief, stating, “How do you sue an unknown person? How does a court issue a judgment in such a farce? No one was served, and no name was written.” He condemned the situation as an example of “coordinated lawlessness” and lamented Nigeria’s descent into a state of impunity.

He highlighted broader implications for business and investment in Nigeria, sharing that an investor he spoke with had decided against entering the country due to its reputation for lawlessness. Obi emphasized that this incident reflects the struggles ordinary Nigerians face daily and reiterated his commitment to establishing a Nigeria where the rule of law prevails and civil rights are protected.

As of now, no government agency has claimed responsibility for the demolition, and no official explanation has been provided.
