Acting national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Amb. Umar Iliya Damagum, has publicly reprimanded the party’s national publicity secretary, Hon. Debo Ologungaba, for unauthorized comments regarding the PDP’s dispute with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
Damagum issued a statement criticizing Ologungaba for prematurely addressing the matter before today’s scheduled meeting between party leaders, stakeholders, and INEC chairman Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu. Ologungaba had previously challenged INEC for allegedly attempting to dictate the party’s affairs concerning the NEC meeting fixed for June 30, after INEC cited non-compliance with regulations requiring the national chairman and secretary to sign the notification letter.
Damagum clarified that Ologungaba’s statements were made without the NWC’s approval and emphasized the party’s commitment to conducting its 100th NEC meeting through collective consensus and proper coordination, rather than individual assertions. He expressed disappointment that such a sensitive issue was publicly discussed without following internal procedures or consulting party leadership.
Damagum affirmed that Ologungaba’s views were his personal opinions and do not reflect the official stance of the PDP. He also noted that this was not the first instance of Ologungaba acting unilaterally, disregarding the party’s decision-making processes.
Despite these internal issues, Damagum reassured party members and the public that the PDP remains dedicated to upholding its internal autonomy and resisting external interference responsibly and cohesively. He emphasized the importance of unity, discipline, and adherence to due process within the party.
