The Senate has called on the newly appointed board of the South South Development Commission (SSDC) to prioritize reversing environmental degradation, economic sabotage, and infrastructure collapse in the Niger Delta. During the screening of nominees, Senate Committee Chairman, Senator Benson Kombowei, emphasized the need for community-driven initiatives to tackle these pressing issues.

Key appointments include Hon. Chibudom Nwuche from Rivers State as Chairman and Usoro Offiong Akpabio from Akwa Ibom State as Managing Director. Other Executive Directors include Marcus Nie Eji (Projects – Rivers), Aganaba Preye Steven (Social and Human Capital Development – Bayelsa), Dr. Timi Alari Ayibatonye (Corporate Services – Delta), Joseph Ugheoke (Commercial and Environmental Development – Edo), and Ambassador Sony Abang (Finance – Cross River).

Senator Kombowei urged the board to launch inclusive projects that address poverty and ecological damage, stressing that the region has faced decades of neglect. Senator Asuquo Ekpeyong echoed these sentiments, highlighting the importance of collaboration and inclusiveness.

Akpabio pledged a focus on equitable resource distribution and human capital development, particularly in underserved rural communities. She promised to prioritize healthcare access and revamp deteriorating health infrastructure.
