Nigeria is collaborating with the ECOWAS Parliament to expedite the construction of the Abidjan-Lagos highway, a vital project aimed at enhancing jobs, trade, and regional development. The 1,028-kilometer highway will connect five countries, significantly impacting millions of lives along its route.

The initiative was discussed during a visit by ECOWAS Parliament Speaker Memounatou Ibrahima to Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar. The meeting focused on bilateral partnerships to facilitate the project and support other ECOWAS initiatives that benefit member states.

Construction is set to begin in 2026 and is expected to be completed by 2030. The highway will link Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Nigeria, serving an urban population projected to exceed 170 million by 2050.

Ambassador Tuggar emphasized the importance of the ECOWAS Parliament in promoting economic growth and democratic governance in West Africa. The project is anticipated to stimulate economic activities, improve connectivity, and promote cross-border trade.

Discussions also included strategies to enhance education, technology, and youth empowerment, aiming to foster economic contributions from younger generations. The collaboration highlights a commitment to regional democracy and development, reinforcing the role of ECOWAS as a central player in shaping West Africa’s future.
