The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of pushing Nigeria toward a one-party dictatorship, citing worsening economic hardship, insecurity, and political repression.

In a communiqué issued after its 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, the party claimed that recent actions by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government point to a calculated attempt to silence opposition and entrench a totalitarian system.

The statement, presented by the PDP’s Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, described the current state of the country as a direct consequence of what it called the APC’s incompetence, corruption, and disregard for democratic principles.

According to Damagum, “The NEC condemns the worsening insecurity, the killings, kidnappings, and terrorism across the country, all worsened by the government’s failure to uphold its constitutional duty to protect citizens.”

He added that policy decisions such as the removal of fuel subsidy, increased electricity tariffs, and excessive taxation have led to business closures, job losses, and rising poverty. The party further accused the government of budget padding, diversion of public funds, and inconsistent policies that have scared off investors and stalled development.

The PDP also expressed concern over what it sees as a deliberate campaign to stifle political opposition ahead of the 2027 elections.

“It is clear that this agenda is driven by the APC’s fear of inevitable defeat in 2027,” Damagum said.

Bauchi State Governor and Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Bala Mohammed, supported the allegations, accusing the Federal Government of using threats and exclusion to destabilize the opposition.

“Despite pressures and defections, we remain united and committed to defending our democracy,” he stated.

The PDP’s declaration signals a renewed political clash between Nigeria’s main opposition party and the ruling APC as the race toward 2027 begins to take shape.
